MAORI
The school actively supports Taha Maori. Each year
new students and staff are welcomed onto the School Marae in a whole school event
(Powhiri).
The school has its own Te-Tihi-a-maru Kapa Haka group and combines with Timaru
Girls' High School and Craighead for special events.
Annually, boys from the school take part in the Nga Mana Korero speech
competition and compete in the Canterbury regional Maori/English section of this
contest.
Students attend the national speech competitions under the Aoraki Schools banner
and have done so for many years.
Special inter-class challenges are held between Year 9 and 10 classes to promote
Maori as an integral part of New Zealand's society.
The school has its own whanau room (pictured above) officially known as "Tane
Mahuta", a specialist teacher of Maori and a Dean of Maori students.
