The first week of Term two ended on an overcast note for students, staff and friends of the school at TBHS with the annual ANZAC Day Service held in Hogben Hall to honour those who served New Zealand in times of conflict.

The guest speaker, Mr Doug Drake (pictured left), a student at TBHS during
World War 2, addressed the students, staff and Old Boys who had gathered for the memorial
service. He was described by the Rector as a passionate old boy, aviator and journalist.
During the war years he was a member of the Air Training Corp and, in 1947, he joined the
staff of the Timaru Herald. His connection with the school resumed when he served as a
member of the Board of Govenors.
As well as describing his life as a teenager growing up in Timaru during the war, Mr
Drake's address highlighted the importance of not forgetting those who gave their lives
in service to the country and the lifestyle we now enjoy.
The ceremony concluded with the school body and guests passing through an honour guard of Year 13 students before entering the Memorial Library to place poppies at the foot of the stained glassed window.
