Recently, 35 sailors from Christchurch, Timaru and Wanaka competed in the
Southern Districts Teams Racing Yachting Training Regatta at Lake Aviemore held
over four days. Conditions were at times challenging and all sailors demonstrated
good seamanship handling their boats in rough water with strong winds gusting at
over 25 knots. The first two days included coaching from Ross Sutherland of the
New Zealand Team Racing Association and Joe Foster who has previously represented
New Zealand at the World Team Racing. All sailors gained much from such expert
coaching and a marked improvement in the skill level of the sailors was evident.
The final two days were spent racing in a round robin series between all schools
and for the Lund-Conroy trophy contested by schools from Timaru and Wanaka. TBHS
dominated the competitions winning both the round robin series and the
Lund-Conroy Trophy, sailing through undefeated.
The winning team: Graham Shivers, Chris Tulley, Clarke Hegan, Hayden White
(captain)(holding the trophy) ,
Tom Charteris, James Mehrtens, Jacob Pilcher.
The Team from Timaru Boys' High School: Hayden White, Tom Charteris, Clarke
Hegan, Chris Tulley, Jacob Pilcher, James Mehrtens, and Graham Shivers are
looking forward to representing the South Canterbury Region at the 420 National
Secondary Schools Team Racing Regatta which will be held at the Naval Point Yacht
Club in Lyttleton during the second week of the April school holidays.
