High jumps capture the crowd at TBHS Athletics
Sam Small’s record clearance of 1.82m (pictured above) in the
junior boy’s high jump was the standout performance at the Timaru Boys’ High
School Athletic Sports. Small only came into the competition at 1.60m when one
other competitor was left and proceeded to push the bar 8cm above Jarred
Mannex’s 2008 record.
Simon Small and Mannex had a great tussle in the senior high jump before Small
pulled comfortably clear with a winning height of 1.88m. Small held the crowd
spellbound as he attempted to better Gene Pateman’s senior record of 2.00m. In
two bold attempts he just missed 2.02m.
Tim Bowman won the intermediate high jump with William
Geels the best of the minor competitors.
Brett Clifford (top right)was in commanding form in the senior
middle distance events. His 800m of 2min 1.6sec came off a sizzling 55sec opening
lap. Clifford also won well over 1500m and 3000m. Josh Westland
and Alex Smith were equally dominant in long track events.
Jonathon Lord picked up the mantle from his brother Daniel when
he won the Open Walk. The promising 14 year old held more senior athletes at bay
over 1500m which he covered in 7min 44.8sec.
Jarred Mannex proved to be the fastest senior sprinter on the
day. Shaun McDonald (intermediate) and Sukhwinder Singh
Bolina (junior) were also impressive winners over 100 and 200 metres.
The best throwing performance came from Willie Wright in the
senior javelin with a distance of 56.90 metres. The school record set by R.G.
Ball in 1954 of 58.85m was under threat but eluded Wright.
The winning House in 2010 was Simmers.
