TBHS V St Andrew's College (SUMMER)
St Andrew's College from Christchurch scored a narrow victory over Timaru Boys'
High School in the annual summer sports exchange by 3-2.
1st XI cricket
The TBHS 1st XI were narrowly beaten
by their St Andrew's counterparts in the premier event of the exchange. This was
a two day match making it their third consecutive day of cricket on the rectory.
TBHS won the toss and asked the opposition to bat on a damp pitch which offered
assistance to the bowlers. Wickets fell regularly resulting in St Andrew's
collapsing to be 112-9. Importantly, in the context of the match, St Andrew's
put on 40 for the last wicket to take the score through to 152. Blair Brown and
Ben Dunbar both picked up 3 wickets.
In reply, TBHS struggled with both the wicket and poor shot selection which saw
them dismissed for only 94. Brad Leonard, with a hard hit 26, was the best of the
TBHS batsmen. St Andrew's prospered in the 2nd innings as the wicket flattened
out and they declared at 180-4 just before lunch on the 2nd day. George
McDougall bowled steadily to take 2 for 33 off 16 overs. Chasing 240 for victory
off approximately 70 overs, TBHS started brightly led by a fluent 55 off 73 balls
by captain Willy Wright. The momentum continued with a patient 48 from Theo
Davidson and another hard hit innings of 37 by Leonard. At 203-6, TBHS were in a
position to take the game but again some poor shot selection and good fielding
and batting by St Andrew's saw the local side dismissed for 216, 24 runs short of
victory. Leo Carter with 8 wickets and a double of 47 and 50, both not out was
the dominant player for St Andrew's.
Colts cricket
In the colts cricket game, TBHS scored a comfortable win showing that the school
has good young players coming through the grades. St Andrew's scored 125 for 8
off 30 overs and TBHS reached this target quite easily for the loss of only 5
wickets. Dan Mehrtens took 3 wickets, Todd McGregor scored 46 and Latham Gibb,
40.
Touch rugby
In the touch contest, Timaru Boys' won all three games comprehensively with Doug
Hill and Buster O’Connell leading the way.
Yachting
In the inaugural competition, St Andrew's outsailed TBHs 4 - 1 in what become
something of a lottery in the light winds.
Tennis
The local tennis players were outplayed by their St Andrew's counterparts and
were beaten 9 - 2. TBHS number one, Ryan Ammar, was able to defeat the STAC
number one in the match of the tie.
Overall, this was a close exchange with the visitors claiming victory.
