In cold conditions in Dunedin, Otago Boys' High School took out the annual winter sports exchange against Timaru Boys' High School, 7.5 to 1.5.
A large crowd was in attendance to view a gritty TBHS challenge in the the
1st XV game against a physically daunting OBHS. Although OBHS probably dominated the 1st
half the 2nd half was very different with TBHS often first to the breakdown allowing them
to put pressure on the home side's backline. This resulted in two tries out wide for
Jarred Mannex and second half substitute, Henry Chamberlain. Felise GaoGao was again the
dominant player up front as he often put his body on the line for his team.
The hockey 1st XI side drew 2-2 with the hosts. Goals to Campbell Ross and Logan Guthrie put TBHS right in the match and perhaps in the end were unlucky not to win. This side continues to impress inthe interschool competitions.
The battle of the two soccer 1st XI teams was played out on a less than satisfactory ground for such a game. TBHS struggled with the conditions and the style of their opponents' play who relied on the long ball on the narrow heavy pitch. OBHS went in 1-0 up at half time and went 2-0 shortly after half time. TBHS pulled one goal back employing OBHS tactics with a long ball put away by Tom Deeley. OBHS put another away shortly after to take out the game 3-1. Tom Merrilees showed a lot of character with a number of big tackles.
Basketball struggled with their opponents who shot consistently from the 3 point line. Although TBHS tried valiantly, OBHS were too classy and took out the tie by 121-48.
The junior cross country team also struggled with their opposition taking
out the clash.
Squash was a close run affair with the home team taking out the tie 2-1.
The trap shooting squad could not have been closer with a 254 tie.
The debaters were arguing the negative with the moot, "That dictatorships are a threat to global peace." Will Johnson (TBHS) was named best speaker of the day but, unfortunately, OBHS took out the debate by the narrowest of margins 257-256. This is a young team and teacher in charge Tony Bunting was very happy with the result.
Golfolf was played at a windswept and cold Balmacewan course with Josh Rumble the standout for the day (net score of 81-15-66). This result helped Timaru take out the best net score whilst OBHS took out best gross.
Overall, this was an enjoyable but long day for the Timaru Boys' HS.
