Ben Grant, the guest speaker at the 2011 Winter Sports Awards Assembly, had
this message for the students, take every opportunity that comes your way.
As a young student at TBHS, Ben was given the whistle at a hockey game and asked to referee the match. From this humble beginning he has risen through the ranks of NZ hockey referees and has achieved a great deal of recognition within the sport.
However, as he told the students, his road to success has not always been smooth. He recalled one tournament which he described as, "the worst [he] had ever refereed in", where he was appointed to a game that he didn't even feel worth turning up to as he believed he had performed badly in previous games by letting the pressure get to him. After the competition he returned home determined to regain his confidence and put, "hours on end", into his umpiring. This effort paid off. In a sport where it rare to gain the recognition he has before the age of 25, Ben (21) has become an international referee having umpired tests between NZ and Australia and NZ and Malaysia and is a Hockey NZ mentor with responsibility for all NZ referees under the age of 18.
He concluded his address by telling the students that the main lesson he learnt at school was to take a different path from the norm and push on to see how far you can go.

Individual Sporting Achievements
TBHS again fielded 7 teams in the local senior and junior competition and the
school acknowledges the role of outside coaches and managers and also the Senior 1st XI
players in enabling this to happen.
The 1st XI came 5th in the local Senior mens 1st Division. This team also went away to the Premier Secondary Schools Soccer Tournament in Napier where against some top quality opposition they finished 20th in New Zealand. This team then returned to Timaru and made the final of the South Canterbury Cup, Timarus most prestigious trophy. The boys made a real fight of this and despite playing some top quality soccer lost the game 3-2.
A highlight of the interschool games was a 3-0 win over Christchurch Boys High
School.
The highlight in the lower grades was the 17th grade TBHS Blue team coming 2nd in their
competition. (photo: Tom Merrilees)

At
TBHS we field 6 hockey squads. The 1st XI play in the senior division. The boys this year
have found the weekly competition a bit tough going, although they have managed
competitive results. In the exchanges, we play against some of the main South Island
teams. This year we have shown we are on an equal footing having beaten Christchurch
Boys' High School, drawn with Otago Boys' High School and lost narrowly to STAC. The
other exchange was a resounding win against Waitaki BHS.
For tournament the 1st's compete for the India Shield which is for teams ranked 17-32
throughout New Zealand. This year the tournament was held in Timaru. The team played
exceptionally well finishing runners-up behind STAC. This now means that the team
qualifies for Rankin Cup which is for teams ranked 1-16 in New Zealand. For a team with a
mixture of experienced and junior players the result was one they should all be proud
of.
The 2nd XI in 2011 was almost an entirely new team from 2010. The majority of the team
was made up of junior players and so playing in a competition where they play against 1st
XIs or mens teams was a significant undertaking. In the weekly competition they
finished mid-field. For tournament the team compete for the Coaches Cup. This year the
team played well, but struggled to find the back of the net this is something the
attackers will want to focus on over the summer break.

2011 was a sound season for rugby at TBHS. The 1st XV were competitive against
all sides, other than champions St Bede's, finishing 5th in the 16 team Press Cup round
robin, missing the top 4 seim-finals by just 2 points. Losing a winnable game to St
Andrews proved costly.
Team highlights were beating Christ's College and Waitaki BHS, along with the draw against Christchurch BHS. Individually, Logan Surridge and Jaron Chamberlain were selected for the South Island schools trial and Aki Seiuli was included in the South Canterbury Senior Heartland championship side, a notable achievement. Our two under 18 teams made the final of the under 18 grade with the whites emerging victorious. In the under 16 grade the colts made the final and all four under 14 1/2 teams competed evenly in the local competition and the A and B sides did well in the interschool fixtures.
