Waitaki Interschool a close run affair

The 128th running of the Timaru Boys' High School interschool with Waitaki Boys' was a close run contest with Timaru taking out the exchange by 10 wins to 9 with 1 draw. This exchange had been rescheduled due to poor weather two weeks ago.

ImageThe 1st XV rugby team finished an up and down season on a positive note with a 22-14 victory over Waitaki. Felise Gaogao continued his amazing form with an early try as he pushed off rivals with ease to score. Jaron Chamberlain converted. Jaron scored the second try and converted and was closely followed by a Henry Chamberlain try. Timarus dominance waned in the 2nd half as WBHS threatened a come back with two late tries. However, they ran out of time and Timaru won. Tom Charteris and Aki Seiuli were outstanding with their high work rate.

The 2nd XV rugby team had a healthy 34-5 win with William Rooney performing with distinction.  Brodie Taylor also stood out with a high work rate. This was a chance for members of the team to press for higher honours next year.

The U16 Rugby team struggled with referee interpretations and they lost in the last play of the game, 29-26. Matt Merrilees and Michael Metherall were two players who toiled away and were unlucky not to gain the win for their team.
The U14a team were totally dominant winning 121-0 as they totally outplayed their much smaller rivals. Matt McKenzie, Johno Burt and Cameron Hayes set the platform for success as they dictated play throughout the game. The U14b team were nearly as dominant winning 56-0.

ImageThe 1st XI Hockey continued their recent tournament success on a high against Waitaki winning the game 7-0. Andrew Ross was the standout player with a hat trick as he continued his recent good form. Will Carter was also one to catch the eye. This is a team that has impressed in the last couple of weeks.

The 2nd XI hockey mirrored their 1st team with a 7-0 win, Jack Leslie stood out for Timaru. The 2nd XI are showing that there are a number of players able to make the step up to the senior team next year.

The trapshooting team performed with distinction as William Rooney, Lachie Hamilton, Ben Young and Thomas McIntyre all shot well. However, it was not enough as the home team used local knowledge to their advantage to take out the tie 279 to 272.

The only team to draw on the day was squash as they fought out a 2-2 result. Chris Williams stood out with a superior all court displayand Josh Hodges was also one to impress.

The 1st XI soccer team struggled with their 9th game in 9 days and only scored the winning goal in the last minute of play to take out the game 2-1. Goals were scored by Tom Deeley and Nathan McNichol. The post and the crossbar were also hit on numerous occasions as TBHS struggled with tired legs. The Waitaki keeper also stood out as he thwarted the Timaru attack on numerous occasions.

The junior football team impressed with an 8-2 win over Waitaki with Leo Kinvig, the hero, netting 4 goals as he showed the older boys how to finish. Charlie Smith and Jordan Howie-Beattie also netted twice. The Timaru boys are showing that playing in more senior grades has benefitted their play with a dominant display.

The senior Basketball team struggled but they continued to narrow the gap against their southern opponents as they went down 79-52. TBHS struggled with the local conditions as they tried to wear down their opponents. Leon Demetriades gave up the referee's whistle for this game and top scored for Timaru.

ImageThe junior basketball team were a lot closer competitively to their opponents as they went down 51-43 with Cam Keelty the standout for TBHS as he was at the centre of most plays.

Badminton struggled for numbers as its top team was decimated by players being unavailable due to playing for other teams.

The debaters were off voice as both juniors and seniors ended up on the losing side of the argument.

Chess rounded out the wins with a comfortable result on the chess boards.

This left golf to round out the results with a 3-1 loss. Damien Rodgers with 70 provided the only TBHS win.

The interschool was played in perfect overhead conditions and in great spirit as some 450 boys from both schools competed.
