Rowing - 2009It has been a brilliant 2 months for the Timaru Boys’ High School Rowing Club. Firstly they tasted success at the South Island Champs at Lake Ruataniwha. The U15 crew of Daniel Lorimer, Brad Ryan, Cameron Crampton, Russell Crampton and cox Hamish Callaghan collected two golds in the U15 four and quad. Brad and Cameron then combined to take gold in the U15 double. Scott Buckingham, Jesse Smith, Jared Sanderson, Aziz Askin and cox Hooper Kelly-Smith took out gold in the novice four and quad. Jesse and Jared combined to take third in the double. Matt Ryan took gold in the open eight as part of a Timaru Rowing Club crew. The novice four of Scott, Jesse, Jared, Aziz and Hooper competed last week at the National Rowing Champs held at Lake Ruataniwha against crews a lot bigger and whose average age was a lot older. This four took out bronze in the novice four. They then combined with Daniel Lorimer and Patrick Hill along with two students from Roncalli to take out fourth in the novice eight. Daniel and Patrick are Year 10 and 11 respectively and the older boys in the crew were hugely impressed by their contribution. They were unlucky to miss bronze by just over a metre. These crews are well coached by Steve Sanders.
The star of the week for TBHS was undoubtedly Matt Ryan who combined with rowers from
Roncalli and Timaru Rowing club to take out gold and two silvers. He took gold in the
club coxless quad and silver in both the senior coxless quad and the senior At the South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, the U15 crew of Daniel Lorimer, Brad Ryan, Cameron Crampton and Russell Crampton won silver in the U15 four and bronze in the U15 quad. Brad and Cameron combined to win silver in the double. The lightweight crew of Ethan Borcovsky, Brad Ryan, Ben Morgan and Matt Ryan won bronze in the novice four. Ethan and Ben also won silver in the U16 double. Coxswains Hooper Kelly-Smith won one gold and two bronzes and Hamish Callagan won one silver. Maadi Cup
At the Maadi Cup, the U15 crew of Brad Ryan, Cameron Crampton, Russell Crampton, Daniel
Lorimer and cox Hooper Kelly-Smith followed the seniors’ example and captured a bronze
medal in the U15 four. This crew rowed well all week and were unlucky to be shut out of
finishing higher by two excellent Hamilton crews. They were also 4th in the final of
the U15 quad. Brad Ryan and Cameron Crampton rowed in the U15 double final but fatigue
was setting in by this stage and the boys finished 8th. Brad also competed in the U18
lightweight 4 with Matt Ryan, Ben Morgan, Ethan Borcovsky and cox Hamish Callaghan.
This crew finished 8th in the final. Matt competed in the U18 single and won the B
final. This put him in the top 10 from a field of over 50 rowers. At the recently held Timaru Rowing Prizegiving, Scott Buckingham, Jared Sanderson, Aziz Askin, Hooper Kelly-Smith and Jesse Smith were winners of the sweep oared rowers; Jesse also won the best novice rower of the year. Daniel Lorimer was the most improved novice rower. This caps off a very good season for Timaru Boys’ High School. ROWING - 2008Maadi Cup
Timaru Boys’ High School has returned from the 2008 Maadi Cup with an eye to the
future. The Year 9 and 10 rowers Ethan Borcovsky, Brad Ryan, Ben Morgan, Tom Merrilees,
Billy Smith along with cox Hooper Kelly-Smith returned some promising results. The U15
4 made the A final but found the going tough coming in at 8th place. Pre-Maadi Cup events
The crews have tasted success at recent regattas and are looking forward to the Maadi
Cup which is the National Secondary Schools regatta. Jesse Bown and Matt Ryan are
peaking at the right time with a 2nd in the U17 double sculls at the Canterbury
Championships and a well earned 1st at the South Island Championships. |
